In yet another sign that the Kabul government is willing to try anything to get a peace deal, sources close to the presidential palace have told SIK that there are plans for a “Renaissance Festival” as part of this year’s Eid celebrations.
“We think this builds on a strong tradition of Afghans on horseback, and gives people a chance to experience a little more of the West,” the Arg source said. The source went on to say that watching Game of Thrones is the one thing the National Unity Government can agree on, with at least one first vice president very interested in heads on pikes.
“There’s been some lively discussions about bringing the Taliba in for the festival. And more than one senior member of the government has volunteered to help them with what they call ‘pike placement skills,'” the source said.
Members of parliament protested the use of government funds to hold the festival, and a last-minute grant from foreign donors had to be pulled together. The US Embassy could not be reached for comment on how this was being funded, and there are reports that Embassy staff are planning their own festival, with jousting planned for the pool.
