War hero, one-time presidential candidate, senator, and fan of putting boots on the ground John McCain was in Afghanistan this past week, getting a feel for charts on the ground in the country.

Senator McCain listens as someone explains another chart.

Senator McCain listens as someone explains another chart.

“There’s just no substitute for being there to get the truth about what’s happening in the region,” the senator said. “I can’t tell you how many times I’ve seen the same chart in a Power Point presentation at the Pentagon, but until you see it for yourself in a hangar in Bagram? There’s no substitute for that level of transparency.”

The senator was in the country for a whirlwind tour that he hoped would feature t more charts. And he was impressed with how hard it was to get a presentation like this done in a short amount time.

“For security reasons, the people I met with didn’t know I was coming until the day I arrived,” McCain said. “So for them to locate an easel, a dry erase board, and a large scale printer in time for this critical briefing is a real testament to how hard our men and women in uniform work every day.”

The senator planned on making some strong recommendations to the White House when he returned, saying he was disappointed with Obama’s support for the war.

“Can you imagine what it would be like to only have three different colors of whiteboard marker for something like this?” The senator shook his head. “Back in the US, this would never be acceptable. I’ve got my staff working now on getting these fine soldiers and airmen the blue markers they said they desperately need.”
